Marietje Schaake on the impact of Big Tech

The best thing I did on a gloomy Monday night was… going to church. So, did I suddenly become religious? No silly, there was an almost two hour Q&A session with Marietje Schaake about the impact of big tech on our democracy. 🤯

Yes, the evening was as insightful and excellent as one would expect! Marietje’s ability to give elaborate, eloquent yet understandable answers to each question was impressive. In this way, I got the feeling that the not-your-typical-tech crowd felt included.

Ok, so you’re sad you missed it, you should, but here a short sum up of my learnings:

✨Europe should invest and fase out. Meaning: in order to become more independent and fase out of big US tech (on every level, especially in government!) we should invest in EuroStack (read more about it here:https://euro-stack.eu/ . Some parts of the stack will be easier to develop here than others so strategic alignment on investments within Europe is necessary.

✨The embracement of ethics in AI by big tech did not lead yet to different behaviour and reeks of ‘green washing’.

✨ Nothing as we know it, is guaranteed.

✨ Remember, there is no other industry with as few regulations as tech (yes even in Europe!). Regulation does not kill innovation.

I was slightly surprised that Marietje didn’t dare to share the future scenario, because of the negative spiral we are on. Then again, with the recent developments her stance was not that shocking.
